본문

The 2024 G.MAP×Kiaf×C-Lab Immersive Media Art Exhibition, titled Water Trios, draws inspiration from three key climate-related elements: temperature and wind, which are greatly influenced by ocean currents, and precipitationwater that falls from the sky in the form of rain and snow. It is believed that they are responsible for most of today’s extreme weather events, including La Mama, which has been increasingly mentioned since the mid-2000s, as well as the frequent occurrences of El Niño and La Niña. The exhibition interprets the climate crisis as a chain reaction or an interconnected phenomenon involving these three elements, serving as a relevant and timely occasion to convey its urgency through language and visual art. The exhibition is particularly significant for its display of artworks that explore natural phenomena associated with “water”an essential element for human survivalwhich are influenced by human activities, such as ocean currents, snow, rain, and clouds.

The exhibition features works by Seunghyo Jang and Robert Chang Chien, who have elevated the climate crisis into compelling works of art. We hope that the exhibition, which explores the themes of climate, art, and humanity, will encourage the audience to confront the current crisis and reflect on its implications.

Description of work

Seunghyo Jang assembles numerous objects and creates collages to produce a vibrant and sensory world. His art goes beyond mere aesthetics to reveal the “interaction” of all elements within the universe through their coexistence and harmony. Reminiscent of the Buddhist Huayan world, his work features scenes where everything in the world turns into flowers and becomes a single whole, capturing their essence and significance. He has collaborated on large-scale projects with prominent institutions like the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the National Museum Foundation of Korea, SBS, and MBC, showcasing works that communicate diverse messages through the rich array of elements filling the screen.
This work depicts a beautiful world envisioned by the artist, where everything in it exists in harmony. It illustrates that humans are also a part of nature by portraying the harmony between man-made objects, each representing a different country, and the natural landscape. We can see whales—well-known victims of habitat destruction, overfishing, and climate change—swimming in the sky above them. The image of whales floating in the air instead of the sea serves as a visual metaphor for the symbiotic relationship between humanity, nature, and life. The piece hints at the urgent need to create an environment where biodiversity is protected, allowing all flora and fauna to thrive, while also reflecting his aspiration for such a world to become a reality.

Description of work

Robert Chang Chien’s work engages audiences on multiple sensory levels through the skillful use of poetic and cinematic techniques. In 2019, a first-of-its kind funeral was held in Iceland for the glaciers that had disappeared. Inspired by this event, the artist filmed, recorded, and conducted interviews in Iceland, capturing the anxiety and pain that climate change has inflicted on humans. The video work, imbued with a transcendent and spiritual quality, portrays the vanishing glaciers and the changing Arctic environment—a stark reminder of the impact of global warming and humanity's careless actions on nature.
Robert Chang chien's artwork, set in the Arctic landscape of Iceland, centers on the diminishing glaciers and narwhals to illustrate the severe ecological and environmental challenges facing the region. The title of the work, Narstalgia, is a combination of "Narwhal" and "Solastalgia," a term describing the emotional distress caused by climate or environmental changes. The prefix "Nár" in "Narwhal" originally meant "corpse" or "death" in Old Norse, which powerfully yet beautifully alludes to the devastating impact of the climate crisis.
