Including Artist Talk After Performance / Possible to register for on site after pre applier
Stelarc, one of Australia’s leading performance artists, will present his recent performance at UNESCO Forum taking place in G.MAP , Gwangju , South Korea.
In a career spanning over 50 years, Stelarc has been interrogating alternative anatomical architectures, augmenting the body with a Third Hand, an Extended Arm and 6-legged walking robots. He has an Extra Ear, surgically constructed on his arm.
Stelarc interrogates the boundary between the human and the natural world. His performance art problematises the body, its existential presence and ontological status through radical technological transformation in an age of ecological crisis and climate change.
In this performance he will be incorporating a 3D printed headset and custom engineered electronics to acoustically amplify breath, muscle and heartbeat signals and also allow his body to become the video switcher and mixer live during the performance. These sensor systems have been developed by engineers and researchers at KMD lab since the Spring of 2023. Sensor Bracelets developed at JOLT Arts in Melbourne, will augment the bio-data sounds. The live, interactive performance generates a synchronicity of sound, image and movement, the body becoming an extended operational system, reimagining and reconfiguring what a body is, how a body performs and probing what it now means to be human.

Stelarc is an Australian performance artist, who has lived in Japan for 19 years. His projects and performances explore alternate anatomical architectures, interrogating issues of embodiment, agency, identity and the post-human. Stelarc’s works incorporate Prosthetics, Robotics, Medical Imaging and Biotechnology.
Between 1973-1975 he made 3 films of the inside of his body. Between 1976-1988 he completed 27 body suspensions with insertions into his skin. He has performed with a Third Hand, a Stomach Sculpture and Exoskeleton, a 6-legged walking robot. Fractal Flesh, Ping Body and Parasite are internet performances that explore remote and involuntary choreography via a muscle stimulation system. He is surgically constructing and stem-cell growing an ear on his arm that will be electronically augmented and internet enabled. For the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art he exhibited and performed with a 9m long 4m high Reclining StickMan robot with online interactivity. His recent projects and performances in 2022 include Anthropomorphic Machine, Melbourne, Human / Code Ensemble, Yokohama and StickMan / miniStickMan, Melbourne. In 2023, Corporeal Counterpoint at KMD, Yokohama and Sculpting Sound, Krakow. And in 2024, “KYOSHIN” Sonic Resonance at CCBT, Shibuya, Tokyo.
